Failing as a Writer Is the First Step to Success

The writing experience is a humbling journey. Take it slow.

In my first month as a writer on Medium, I contributed 12 articles. Those articles had a total of 3 reads resulting in earnings of $0.

The first day that I walked into a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, I got crushed by anybody and everybody. Entering the writing dojo is no different.

What if Stephen King or J.K. Rowling decided to write articles for Medium? If they signed up, how would they do in their first month? Would they get crushed as I did? Probably not. I bet they would earn a decent amount of revenue for their work.

What if Gordan Ryan or Keenan Cornelius walked into a new BJJ club and decided to participate. Do you think they would get crushed? Probably not. I guess that they wipe the floor with anybody and everybody. The writing arena is no different.

I see new guys sign up for BJJ class, and they get straight up pissed off at getting submitted by a smaller opponent.

I see new writers on Medium that sign up and submit a bunch of articles and get pissed off at their results. Their ego goes into full gear, and they decide to double their efforts to prove the world wrong. They want to prove that they deserve an audience. Fair enough.
